How to Protect Your Vehicle From Road Salt

Salt does its worst work underneath
The paint you can see is the least of it. Brake and fuel lines, subframe seams, rocker panels and suspension mounts collect brine and hold it against bare metal all winter.
By the time rust is visible on a rocker in Bethlehem or Easton, the seam behind it has been working on the problem for a couple of seasons.
Wash on the warm days
Rinse the underbody whenever the temperature climbs above freezing, ideally within a day or two of a salted storm. An underbody rinse matters more than a shiny hood.
Seal the paint before winter
A durable sealant or coating applied in the fall keeps salt film from bonding to the clear coat and makes winter washes far more effective.
Do not forget the interior
Salt tracked into carpets holds moisture, which is how a car develops that permanent damp smell. Rubber mats in winter and a hot water extraction in spring solve it.
