5 Warning Signs of Transmission Problems

June 27, 2026 · 4 min read · Alex Foreign Motors, Bethlehem, PA

1. Slipping or delayed engagement

Revs rising without matching acceleration, or a pause before the car moves when you select drive, means the transmission is not holding pressure the way it should.

2. Harsh or unpredictable shifts

Clunks between gears can be worn mounts, tired fluid, solenoid problems or adaptations that were never reset after previous work. Not all of them are expensive.

3. Leaks

Reddish fluid on the driveway is worth immediate attention. Transmissions tolerate low fluid very badly and very briefly.

4. A burnt smell

Burnt fluid means the transmission has been overheating, often after towing or long climbs. Fluid condition tells us a great deal before we ever open anything.

5. Warning lights or limp mode

If the car locks into a single gear, the module has detected a fault and is protecting itself. Do not keep driving it — call (610) 868-1941 and we will scan it properly.
